Why nacl is used in freezing mixture instead of cane sugar?

Answer»

NACL dissociates into Na+ and Cl- , making it’s van’t Hoff’s factor 2 , whereas sugars being non-electrolytes don’t dissociate in a SOLVENT , and that makes their van’t Hoff’s factor 1. Because freezing point depression DEPENDS on the van’t Hoff’s factor of solute (ΔTf=i * Kf * m) , it’s a good idea to use a solute having a high van’t Hoff factor for making a solution with LOW freezing point.
