Why magnesium ribbon should be clean before burning

Answer» Magnesium is a very reactive metal. So, when it is exposed to air it reacts with oxygen to form a layer of magnesium oxide on its surface. It is cleaned by sand paper to remove this layer of magnesium oxide from the magnesium surface. Than we will be able to burn the magnesium metal
For remove of protective layer
The magnesium ribbon which we usually use has a coating of magnesium oxide which is formed by the slow action of oxygen of air on it. So before burning the magnesium ribbon is cleaned. This is done to remove the protective layer of MgO from the surface so that it may easily react with the Oxygen in air on heating.
