Why is weekend glycol added to water in read radiators? |
Answer» Answer:It is used as an anti-freeze Explanation:Adding ethylene GLYCOL or weekend glycol to water reduces the freezing point of water. Water freezes at temperatures much less than 0 degree Celsius when ethylene glycol is added to it. It is used as an anti-freeze. This practice was mostly practiced in older radiators in cold weather CONDITIONS. Modern radiators use coolants that contain ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3 butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, diethylene glycol or glycerin for which we don't need to add any extra glycol. Another aspect of USING the glycols is that they have a higher boiling point(197 DEG C) as compared to water. Hence, they don’t get vapourised easily inside the radiator. They also have a higher specific heat capacity for which they are capable of transferring more heat from the engine as compared to water. |
