Why is water not suitable to control fire of oil and petroleum |
|
Answer» r is heavier than PETROL therefore slips down permitting the petrol to rise to the surface and continue to BURN. Besides, the existing temperature is so high that the water poured on the fire evaporates even before it can extinguisher the fire. The latter is true if small quantity water is poured. Thus the petrol fire cannot be extinguished by water.Water is denser than oil. So it sinks below the oil and oil keeps burning on top and fire cannot be controlled. Fuels with a specific gravity less than water, such as gasoline or oil, FLOAT on water, resulting in the fire continuing in the FUEL on top of the water. When water poured on such liquids it sinks to the bottom where it evaporates and expands rapidly due to which it SPREADS fire in all directions. |
