Why is the nitrogen molecule less reactive?

Answer»

Nitrogen is less reactive due to high bond order (triple bond and consequently high bond enthalpy. Nitrogen has the ability to form pπ -pπ multiple bonds with itself (and with other elements having small size and high electronegativity). Thus, nitrogen exists as a diatomic molecule with a triple bond between the two atoms. Thats why nitrogen molecule are less reactive.
