Answer» Lord Dalhousie is often considered asthe founder or maker of modern India. There are many facts that prove this. Heincreased the area covered by British India to cover areas such as Jhansi,Satara, Oudh and Punjab. While he was good at conquering extra land, he wasalso a very able administrator. The states became centralized and modernreplacing the old province system. He brought in the railway system andpostal stamps to India. Railways were used for administrative, strategic and commercialpurposes. Along with the introduction of postal stamps, he also introduced over4,000 telegraph lines. The postal stamps also made postal charges uniform.Dalhousie started educating the masses and creating a hierarchy of educationalinstitutes. For example, villages, districts and towns has primary schools,high schools and colleges, and universities respectively. The foundation of modern India’s administration, rail-post-telecom setup and three-tier education system is Dalhousie’s involvement in all these. Thus, there is no reason to deny that Lord Dalhousie is the maker of modern India. |
