Why is preparation of ethers by acid catalyzed dehydration of 2° and 3° Alcohols not a suitable method?

Answer»

Because it is accompanied by the formation of alkenes and is not a suitable method for the preparation of ether from acid catalyzed dehydration of 2° and 3°alcohol, as this reaction involve SN2 mechanism, but dehydration of 2° and 3° alcohol, it follows SN1 due to steric hindrance and tend to form alkenes preferably.
