Why do transition metals show variable oxidation states? [Delhi 2016,14(C)]

Answer»

Transition metals SHOW variable O.S due to incomplete orbital E.Configuration. In transition metals all d-orbitals are never fully filled , they left incomplete . Due this this they exhibit variable O.S. The stable O.S of transition metals is =+3 They even range from +1 to /+8/+9 and so on . The metal carbonyls like NICKEL tetracarbonyl show NI in zero O.S. Their variability is unique among all blocks . If we compare with p-block elements , the variability is not so range as in transition metal. For EXAMPLE Mn=+2/+3/+4/+5/+6/+7 Cr=+3/+4/+5/+6. Os=+3——-+8. However in case of p-block such range of variability is lagging BEYOND. Here the p orbitals are not so much incomplete like in transition.Explanation:
