SIRAJ-UD-DAULAH ORDERED THE BRITISH TO PAY TAXE'S TO HIM LIKE ALL ORHER INDIAN MERCHANT'S. THE BRITISH REFUSED TO DO SO. THIS ANGERED THE YOUNG NAWAB. IN ARTICIPATION OF A WAR WITH THE FRENCH, WHO HAD A TRADING SETTLEMENT  IN CHANDEMAGORE. FROM THEN THE BRITISH STARTED TO FORTIFY CALCUTTA..

Siraj-ud-Daulah ordered the British to pay taxes to him like all other Indian merchants. The British refused to do so. This angered the young nawab. In anticipation of a war with the French, who had a trading settlement in Chandemagore, the British began to fortify Calcutta.
