Who transformed the pungi into shehnai ?

Answer» The emperor\'s (shahi) barber transformed the pungi into shehnai.
The pungi was played in the Royal Court. Due to its shrill and unpleasant sound it was disliked by the emperor so he banned the playing of pungi on the Royal Court. One day the emperor\'s barber made holes on a bamboo stick ( different in structure to that of pungi)and played it in front of the emperor. The emperor was happy with the sound produced by that object and named it Shehnai...
The shehnai was traditionally played in royal courts, temples and weddings. Ustaad Bismillah khan changed the tradition by bringing this instrument onto the classical stage.
