Which reaction takes place when magnesium ribbon burns in air? Give its chemical reaction. |
|
Answer» The magnesium atoms in the ribbon combine with oxygen atoms in the air, to produce a compound, magnesium oxide, which is a white solid, and the reaction also gives off lots of heat and light. It's a bright white light, that is so dazzling that you really must view it only through a piece of dark blue Bristol glass. The white magnesium oxide reacts slightly with water to produce the basic magnesium hydroxide. This is neither like magnesium nor like oxygen, and so indicates that a new chemical substance was produced by the burning. The chemical equation,Mg+ O2MgO shows this reaction but it needs to be balanced to make 2Mg + O22MgO. Like my answer if you find it useful! |
