Answer» Democracy Democracy is undoubtedly better\xa0than other forms\xa0of government. We can\xa0give the following arguments in its favour:(i)\xa0Democracy improves\xa0the quality of decision making. Democracy is based on consultation and discussion. A democratic decision\xa0always involves many persons, discussions and meetings. When a number of\xa0people put their\xa0head together, they are able to point out possible mistakes in any decision. This takes time but there is a big advantage\xa0in taking time over important\xa0decisions. This reduces\xa0the chances of rash or irresponsible decisions.(ii) Democracy provides a method to deal with differences and conflicts. In any society people are bound to have differences of opinions and interests. These differences are particularly sharp in a country like ours\xa0which has an amazing social diversity.\xa0People belong to different\xa0regions, speak different\xa0languages, practice different religions and have different\xa0castes. They look at the world differently and have different preferences. The preference of one group can clash\xa0with those of other groups.\xa0This conflict can be solved peacefully in a democratic set-up. In democracy no one is a permanent winner,\xa0no one is a permanent\xa0loser. Different groups can live with one another peacefully.(iii) Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens. Democracy is based on the principle of\xa0political equality,\xa0on recognising that the poorest\xa0and\xa0the least\xa0educated has the same status\xa0as the rich and the educated.\xa0People are not subjects\xa0of a ruler, they are the rulers\xa0themselves.(iv) Democracy allows us to correct its own mistakes. Another advantage in a democracy is that if mistake are made, they cannot be hidden\xa0for long. There is a space for public\xa0discussion on these mistakes. And\xa0there is a room for correction. Either the rulers have to change their\xa0decisions,\xa0or the rules can be changed This cannot happen\xa0in a non-democratic government.(v) Democracy is more accountable form of government. Democracy responds to the needs of the people. A non-democratic government may and can respond to the people\'s needs, but it all depends\xa0on the wishes of the people\xa0who rule. A democracy requires\xa0that the rulers\xa0have to attend to the needs of the people. |
