A type of WBC (white blood cells) is referred to as Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes or Granulocytes. They contain granules. They are named so because of the varying shape of their nucleus. They are again of three types namely Neutrophils, Eosinophils and Basophils.
However, in common man’s language, by polymorth they usually refer to the Neutrophils, that are present in the highest number as compared to other PMNL(Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes) such as Eosinophils and basophils.
Temporary or transient increase under normal circumstances may occur in case of acute stress or after heavy exercise.
Increased number of neutrophils under pathological or diseased condition signal:
Infection, Bacterial
Any acute inflammation
Tissue destruction or death(necrosis) as in Infarction(heart ATTACK), burns, neoplasia(TUMOR)
