He identified and NAMED oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783) and opposed the hypothesis of phlogistons.He thought that the ENERGY came from a method known as breathing that TRANSFORMED oxygen into CARBON dioxide and heat, just as a burning piece of wood could. Through this EXPERIMENT, Lavoisier was able to show that breathing was a type of slow combustion. |
