Mycoplasma is a mollicute GENUS of bacteria that lack a cell wall around their cell MEMBRANES. This CHARACTERISTIC makes them NATURALLY resistant to antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis (like the beta-lactam antibiotics). They can be parasitic or saprotrophic.
