What is a solenoid ? Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines of (i) a current-carrying solenoid, and (ii) a bar magnet. List two distinguishing features between the two fields. |

Answer» Solution :For solenoid and field pattern of a current-carrying solenoid, see Short Answer Question Number 12 and Fig. 13.21. For MAGNETIC field lines of a BAR magnet, see Fig. 13.3. Two distinguishing features between the field due to a solenoid and field due to bar magnet are as follows: 1. The strength of magnetic field of a solenoid can be changed by CHANGING the current FLOWING through the solenoid. HOWEVER, strength of magnetic field of a bar magnet cannot be changed. 2. The direction of magnetic field in a solenoid may be reversed by reversing the direction of current flowing but magnetic field of a bar magnet cannot be reversed. |
