1.

What is a Richter scale? why do we say that it is not linear scale?

Answer»

A richter scale is used to measure the magnitude of earthquake. We don't say it linear scale for two reasons. Firstly it is logarithmic scale as every difference between each magnitude multiplies by 10 and secondly it is an open ended scale. It has no outer limit.
It was DESIGNED by Charles Richter. Usually people TAKE the outer limit as TEN since no earthquake have occurred above this magnitude.
