What do you mean by Gana? How were they different from the kingdoms ruled by the kings?

Answer»

The term ‘gana’ means people of equal status. Sangha means ‘assembly’. Gana Sangha means an assembly of equal status people. They cover a small area that was ruled by a superior group among them. These gana sanghas practiced “all are equal” traditions. A kingdom means a territory and was ruled by a king or queen. In a kingdom, a family which rules for a long, period becomes a dynasty.
