What are the reasons of conflict between Sinhala and Tamilians in Sri Lanka |
| Answer» Like most other\xa0conflicts of\xa0South Asia, the origins\xa0of\xa0this rift can be traced backed to colonial times. The\xa0Sinhalese\xa0say\xa0Tamils\xa0received preferential treatment under British rule (1796-1948) and point to the disproportionate number\xa0of Sri Lankan Tamil\xa0civil servants, doctors and lawyers at the time\xa0of\xa0independence.\xa0The introduction of the\xa0Sinhala-only act in 1956 triggered riots in Sri Lanka. Further discrimination against the\xa0Tamil\xa0population in Sri Lanka in cultural, political, economic areas led to some\xa0Tamils\xa0harboring resentment against the\xa0Sinhalese\xa0groups and the Government. | |
