Answer» ANSWER---
◆ The reaction in which single substance decomposes two or more substances is called 'DECOMPOSITION REACTION'.
◆ There are three type of decomposition 1. Thermal Decomposition 2. Electrolytic Decomposition 3. Sunlight Decomposition
● When the decomposition reaction carried by heat is called thermal decomposition.
Example = 2FeSO4 --heat--- FE2O3 + SO2 + SO3
● When the decomposition reaction carried by ELECTRIC current is called electrolytic decomposition.
Example = H2 --electric current-- 2H + O2
● When the decomposition reaction carried by sunlight is called sunlight decomposition.
Example 2AgCl --sunlight-- 2Ag + Cl2
◆ importance of decomposition reaction in Metal Industries
● Electrolytic is used in the extraction of metal from their naturally occurring compounds, generally chloride and Oxides.
● Thermal decomposition is used for the production of CaO (Calcium OXIDE). from carbonate which is a major constitute of cement.
● Molten NaCl is electrolytically decomposed to form sodium metal.
● Aluminium metal is obtained by electric decomposition of bauxite ore mixed with cryolite.
