What are the function of the platelets

Answer» It helps in clotting of blood
When blood vessels are cut or damaged, the loss of blood from the system must be stopped before shock and possible death occur. This is accomplished by solidification of the blood, called as coagulation or clotting. The smallest cells in the blood are platelets which are designed for this particular purpose. As soon as an artery or vein is injured, the platelets in the injured area begin to clump together and stick to the edges of the cut. They also release messengers into the blood which perform a variety of functions like constricting the blood vessels to reduce bleeding, attracting more platelets to the area to enlarge the platelet plug and initiating the activation of plasma based on clotting factors such as fibrinogen. The plasma protein fibrinogen is transformed into long, sticky thread of fibrin. Blood clotting takes place when the platelets, RBC and WBC are trapped in these fibres.
