What are reactants and products ?

Answer»

In a chemical reaction, SUBSTANCES (elements and/or compounds) called reactants are changed into other substances (compounds and/or elements) called products. You can't change one element into another in a chemical reaction — that happens in nuclear reactions.

The substances that result from this RECOMBINATION of atoms are called the products of the reaction. When chemical reactions are written down, the reactants are written on the left side, in a similar manner to a math equation; one reactant plus another.

The terms reactant and PRODUCT can be USED to describe constituents of individual enzymatic reactions or entire METABOLIC pathways. Reactants (or 'substrates') are the starting materials for a reaction, In the generic reaction shown below, A and B are the reactants. C and D are the products.
