Answer»

GIVEN:

  • Two NUMBERS are differ by 3
  • Sum of greater number and twice the SMALLER number is 15

TO FIND:

  • What is the smaller number ?

SOLUTION:

Let the larger number be 'x' and smaller number be 'y'

CASE:- 1)

Two numbers are differ by 3

According to question:-

x –y = 3

x = 3 + y....1)

CASE:- 2)

Sum of greater number and twice the smaller number is 15.

According to question:-

x + 2y = 15...2)

Put the value of 'x' in equation 2)

3 + y + 2y = 15

3y = 15 –3

3y = 12

y = \sf{\cancel\dfrac{12}{3}}

y = 4

Put the value of 'y' in equation 1)

x = 3 + 4

x = 7

Hence, the SMALLEST number is 4 and largest number is 7
