Two bodies A and B are made to vibrate in such a way that Body A VIBRATES 10 times in a second and Body B vibrates 120 times in 1 minute.

To find:

  • How is pitch related to frequency?

  • Activity to show this effect.

Solution:

Frequency of body A = 10/60 = 0.16 Hz

Frequency of body B = 120/60 = 2 Hz

Since , Body B has higher frequency, it will produce a shriller (high pitched) sound than Body A.

  • Frequency is directly proportional to the pitch.

  • Higher the pitch , higher will be frequency , higher will be the shrillness of the sound.

Experiment:

  • Go to physics lab of your school.

  • Take two tuning forks of different frequencies (e.g. 256 Hz and 512 Hz)

  • MAKE the forks vibrate by hitting it on a cork plate.

  • Bring the vibrating fork near your ear.

  • You will be ABLE to understand this effect of frequency and pitch.

  • 512 Hz tuning fork will produce high pitched sound than 256 Hz fork.
