                     42= (13-b)b

                       42=13b-b²

                     b²-13b +42=0

                 b²-7b- 6b+42=0

                b (b-7) - 6 (b-7)=0

b-7=0  or  b-6=0

b=7   or  b=6

 Therefore, if b=6 then length is 7 units.

If b=7 then length is 6 units.
