The moon produces no light by itself. The moon shines because it reflects light from the sun. As themoon revolves around the earth different parts of it are lit by the sun. The shape of the moon appearsto change during a month. First it is a thin crescent or C-shape. It gradually gets bigger until we cansee the whole disc. Then it gets smaller until it finally disappears. The moon does not change itsshape, of course. What actually changes is the area which is lit by the sun. These changes are calledthe phases of the moon. The full moon can be seen when the sun lights up the whole side of themoon facing the earth. The new moon appears when the moon is on the side of the earth directly inline with the sun. The side facing the earth is not lit, so it is also sometimes called the "dark moon".Questions1.
