Lucy belonged to a species known as 'Australopithecus afarensis', and she was a vital fossil discovered.
- At the time of her DISCOVERY, Lucy amazingly 'complete' with 40 percent of her skeleton being found intact, instead of a handful of incomplete and DAMAGED fossils. Lucy was named after the Beatles song ‘Lucy in the Sky' with 'Diamonds which Donald' and his team had played in the 'tape player' at the campsite while celebrating Lucy’s discovery.
- Presently the skeleton of Lucy is secreted from the public in a safe in the National Museum of Ethiopia in ADDIS Ababa which was specially constructed for her. The museum is quite close to the excavation spot where Lucy was discovered.
