The difference of the cost of a pen and pencil is RS 32. Write a linear equation in two variables to represent this statement. If the cost of the pen is thrice the cost of the pencil, then find the cost of the pen and pencil.

Answer» \textbf{Answer}

\textbf{Lets suppose that,}
COST of a pen = x Rs.
&
Cost of a PENCIL = y Rs.

SINCE the difference of the cost of a pen and pencil is Rs 32,
=> x - y = 32 --------(1)

\textbf{General <klux>FORM</klux> of linear equation} in \textbf{two variables -}
\textbf{ax + by + c = 0}

So we can write the equation (1) in linear form as,
\textbf{x - y - 32 = 0}

\textbf{According to the question,}
Cost of a pen is THRICE the cost of a pencil,
=> x = 3y

\textbf{Lets put x as 3y in equation (1),}

x - y = 32
=> 3y - y = 32
=> 2y = 32
=> \textbf{y = 16}

Since x = 3y
=> x = 3×16
=> \textbf{x = 48}

\textbf{Cost of a pen = 48 Rs.}
\textbf{Cost of a pencil = 16 Rs.}
\textbf{Linear expression is x - y = 32}
