The compound 'A' i.e. butyronitrile is subjected to the Stephen reaction by using SnCl_(2) and dil. HCl followed by acid hydrolysis to give compound 'B' , which is having a buttery odour and it is used in margarine. Addition of hydrogen cyanide to compound 'B' in the presence of small amount of base gives compound 'C'. Identify the compounds 'B' and 'C'. |
