1.

Teacher in his class brought a Rubix Cube. He wanted to explain surfaces and volumes of the Rubix Cube. He explained that the Rubix cube is a combination of smaller cubes. It contains cubes in 3 x 3 x 3 manner each cube has 2 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm 1. What is the surface area when only nine cubes are considered \( (3 *3*1) \) ? 2. What is the total surface area when one cube is removed from corner?

Answer»

(1) When 9 cubes (3 x 3 x 1) are considered then it becomes a cuboid whose

length(l) = 3a = 3 x 2 cm = 6 cm

breadth (b)  = 3a = 3 x 2 cm = 6 cm

height(h) = a = 2 cm

\(\therefore\) Surface area = 2(lb + bh + hl)

 = 2(6 x 6 + 6 x 2 + 2 x 6) cm2

 = 2 (36 + 12 + 12) cm2

 = 2 x 60 cm2

 = 120 cm2

(2) When one cube of 2cm is removed at the corner then total surface area

= Total surface area of bigger cube - surface area of three sides of small cube + surface area of three new formed sides of small cubes after removing a cube from

 = 6A2 - 3a2 + 3a2

 = 6A2 = 6(3a)2 = 6(3 x 2)2= 63 = 216 cm
