Relative density is the ratio of the density (mass of a unit VOLUME) of a substance to the density of a given reference material (i.e., water). It is usually measured at room temperature (20 CELCIUS degrees) and standard atmosphere (101.325kPa). It is unitless.

In SI units, the density of water is (approximately) 1000 kg/m3 or 1 g/cm3, which MAKES relative density calculations particularly CONVENIENT: the density of the OBJECT only needs to be divided by 1000 or 1, depending on the units.
