So the number can be anything like - 13579 13597 15397 , etc. So LET's jump to algebra. Can we? So let the number be 'abcde' Here they are not being multiplied but they are the digits, ok? So the thousands digit is 'b' What's the face value of b? It's b And the place value? Of course 1000b Let's subtract them now. So it becomes 1000b - b = 999b There's your answer!
