Speech on "teachers and students friendship on Facebook"

Answer»

Personally, I felt that Facebook relationships between students and teachers were unprofessional and blurred the line of proper behavior. According to Pablo (2012), he said there have been a number of REPORTED cases in which teachers have been caught making appropriate comments on their respective students’ Facebook pages, sending students a private message and the same goes for students. Such behavior clearly oversteps boundaries. There is a need to have some boundaries between school/teachers and home/personal lives. Students should have some privacy and be able to interact with friends and post comments and opinions without having to remember a teacher using the information out of context. Once one makes a Facebook account, one can become accustomed to the casualties of Facebook, particularly when posting information. As educators, in order to maintain respect, there’s need to be a certain distance between teachers and students because being friend with students on Facebook provides more information than one is willing to provide in an educational setting and as long as teachers and students do not have access to each others Facebook profiles, teachers remain respectable.
In ADDITION, teachers may also become biased towards students who they are connected with via Facebook. This behavior would be unfair to other students who are not connected on Facebook and it could cause controversy in the CLASSROOM by leading the other students to believe that another student is receiving special treatment and grades because they are connected on face book with the teacher. Also, some student might see a teacher’s Facebook friendship intimidating. They may be hesitant to accept the friendship because of not wanting their teacher to be involved in their personal life. At the same time, they may fear SAYING no to a friend request from a teacher, for fear that they will offend the teacher and negatively affect the teacher’s treatment on them. Beside intimidation is student’s expectation from teachers. A student who has a teacher as a Facebook friend may expect a special treatment from that teacher. The student may also expect the teacher to answer questions regarding ASSIGNMENT and homework that should be reserved for the classroom.
In conclusion, educators should make use of another social media apart from Facebook. There are many "private" social media platforms that already exist, starting to emerge to serve schools and school districts (e.g. Edmodo). These will be customized for the educational environment and will have the appropriate controls and security measures to make it most effective for teaching and learning. So, students and teachers don't need to be friends on Facebook.
