Solve : Windows XP installation ???

Answer»

Ok a friend of mine had a problem with her O/S a file was corrupt allowing it not to pick up any usb device(this was the conclusion i came to after i tried everything else) so i reinstalled xp...well at first i just did the repair hoping that MAYBE when it repaired it that it would fix whatever file was crapped up. well the repair would get to about 1 minute left and before it could finish her laptop would restart itself and wouldn't contine finishing repair after this it would just try and load up to desktop but when it would get to the screen with the windows xp load screen with the BAR that has the loading bars in it it would pull up the blue screen of death and then restart and it wouldn't stay up long enough for me to tell what it was saying. Well i went ahead and just completely reinstalled xp but instead of installing it in the windows folder cuz she had important stuff saved in her my documents and it said that those would be deleted i installed the windows files into a folder she never used that i knew was on there...well the point of this is can i safely remove the old windows files from her previous xp from the windows folder and safely put the new windows files into the windows folder cuz she has to xp's on one harddrive but one doesn't work??Quote

i'm trying to understand ok, even i don't
If you already install the xp (and its work fine) sure you can delete the old windows
folder.
Files and Settings Transfer WizardHow long have you been fixing computers?

First and foremost a reinstall does not wipe out old documents. Some of the other programs that they will have to reinstall might disappear so have them save the files before any more installs.

Second: Once you install Windows somewhere else you could create a boat load of problems installing some programs, because they put the files in some of the old Windows directories!

I would backup the files and install Windows where it belongs! Windows is flaky enough without having two sets of directories to work with.Quote

This is very smartly said.

As for old documents, normally they will be gone, but there is a trick to it.
While installing give a computer different name, then before, and new installation will create new set of Documents and Settings", leaving old set alone.Quote from: Clippy on October 06, 2007, 11:26:33 PM

LOL!!!! Hilarious becuase i didn't mention this but she couldn't save anything off her computer because her computer wouldn't access her cd drive or usb ports. And when i choose to do a fresh install of xp it asked which folder the windows files would go into which of course it was automatically set to windows folder and then it SPECIFICALLY said that if you choose to use this folder previous files and settings including the my documents folder may be deleted. Another reason i don't believe the info that's been given above...I don't know about you, but I have reinstalled XP and never lost anything!

If what you say is true, then M$ messed up again. I have fixed computers and never had a file lost unless the hard drive was fried or somebody reformatted it.

I'm sorry if you thought I was PICKING on your method. All that really counts is that you saved her day and now she has them copied somewhere(I hope).

I used to have a secretary that could literally destroy an OS, because she clicked her mouse and would not even wait to see what happened. So I was quite busy some days.

As for Patio, for a genius expert you sure had nothing much to say! If you have something to contribute here I am ALL EARS!

TedI did feel like you were somewhat putting down the way i was doing things and got a little offensive about it but its all good I mean you have to start somewhere...i'm 19 years old and have been fixing computers for up to 3 years and in 3 years this computer issue(the hardware part of it...not the installing xp thing) has been the only thing I have really struggled on so I think i'm doing pretty good...just sometimes the only way to find out something is to ask and after everything i tried all i had left to do was ask cuz the solution was beyond me but i did fix the problem or "saved her day" and she was very greatful for it and I did learn a lot in the process..and expeirence with these kinds of things is the only way to learn...even if one isn't able to fix a computer problem...can't do everything all the time...besides sometime not being able to do something is the only way of learning how to do it. But yea we got all of her information back and I saved it all to a disc and got her usb ports to work again so its all good now. Thnx for yalls help though!Quote from: Clippy on October 07, 2007, 07:29:19 PM

Busy making friends, Clippy? (You'd better, you're going to need some quite soon I think...)

For a 19 year old, sounds like you learn fast! That is how I started too.

Sometimes you will make mistakes, but at least you learn from them!

RIGHT Contrexy ole buddy?
