Solve : Windows XP CD Key??

Answer»

Okay guys, here is my issue.

I booted up my laptop today, and noticed some errors, sure enough I did a harddrive check and there is a currupt sector of my harddrive!

Un-fortunatly, when I bought my laptop I didn't get a win xp pro cd, ALTHOUGH I have one now, but I don't know the cd key. The OS on there is microsoft genine, i've done the website TEST, and I need to know, is there a application that I can boot from a CD to tell me my windows xp cd key?

Let me know!!

THANKS!!errors like this:

TRAP 0000006 ======EXCEPTION======

edi=0005FD3A esi=0005FFFC ebp=0005FE1F er0=80000011

Maybe different NUMBERS, but when I try to repair XP after a problem with a missing hal.dll file, that's when I discovered that message.

So, I need the CD of the computer so fix the broken sectors and to TOTALLY reformat.That doesn't work, I get the exeption error, when trying to boot to the windows XP CD, so I need to find out my windows xp cd key so then I can re-format with my harddrive application.

Any other ideas? I need a application to boot to that allows me to views my CD Key.Are the Boot.INI files different from windows XP home then windows xp pro?

Are they the same? or different? Quote

BASIC boot.ini files for XP Home and Professional.

Control panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery Settings, Edit ... the boot.ini file so it looks like...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

OR...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

If the Recovery Console is installed on the hard drive there will also be this extra line.

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
1. Create a Bart PE iso, nothing extra added, just use defaults.
2. Boot system from PE CD.
3. Download LoadHive from http://www.matcode.com/codes.htm and put it on a floppy.
4. Run it from the floppy in PE, load C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config\software ... it will mount the hive as SOFTWARE_00.
5. Run regedit, find the SOFTWARE_00 subkey and navigate to CurrentVersion, export that subkey to the floppy.

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion)

6. Move to a working XP machine, backup the DigitalProductId key. Edit the reg file from the floppy to only contain the DigitalProductId  key.
7. Merge the DigitalProductId key from the floppy, run Keyfinder (Magic Jellybean Software) and it should find the key. Make a note of this key. It is the one from your machine.
8. Merge the backup you made and run keyfinder again, to ensure that the original key has been replaced on the good machine.
