Wasn't there once a time when scanners were really famous, and everyone wanted one? We (as in me and my family) had a scanner. (still have the same scanner) When we got one, I'm sure it was quite EXPENSIVE. We would scan photos, my brother would photoshop his report card and scan money. Did you know that World is actually the Roman WORD for "Cosmos"? So when we say "World" we are saying Galaxy or Space instead of Earth. (Ever notice that Earth appears to be the only planet never capitalized?) Earth was the name for our planet, yet we refer to "Earth" as soil or dirt, even sand and clay. So when we discover these substances on other planets, we say that other planets also have "Earth".... For a time, yes, I believe scanners were somewhat of fad. This was before digital cameras became popular. Who would want to use a film camera and scan photos when you can use a digital camera and transfer photos directly to your computer? And, it's much faster and probably BETTER quality than scanned photos. What does the Earth matter have to do with this forum discussion? LOL. Anyway, I believe formal writing still requires capitalization of Earth when using the term to refer to Earth as a planet. If other planets are capitilized, then so is Earth. |
