Solve : what is index.dat??

Answer»

I've been cleaning up my hardrive and I've noticed files named index.dat are scattered around my computer. They look like their listing every internet site i've been to. Any idea what this is and why it's logging every place I go?Thats the whole point of index.dat. no matter how much you clean your temp folders, there still will be a record of what sites you been to.. If you really dont want anyone to know where you went i say use this TRIAL program called evidence eliminator. Btw I don't think you can delete index.dat. Evidence eliminator will just clean it up and erase itI've just got an idea, anybody know how to make a program run at shutdown (after everythings closed)? You cant run anything on shutdown, shutdown starts exiting everything... What were you THINKING of doin? You can run in DOS.. If thats what you meanWhen I tried to delete a index.dat file it said that another process was using it. Probable IExplorer or something along th elines of that. If you could make a batch file that, on SYSTEM shutdown, deleted the index.dat files, SINCE everythings already closed it should have no problem deleting itFrom what I know you cant erase index.dat yourself you need some special  program. Of course they are only trial I do not know any full versions out yet free. Anyways you shouldn't be worry about it unless someone checks you computer everyday HTTP://www.ccleaner.com will delete it on the next reboot.Have a look here  http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/windowstips/story/0,24330,3668551,00.html
command prompt

cd\ to get to c:\

then type: del index.dat  /s use /s to get all the sub directorieskatdaddy - that won't work 'cos when Windows is running some of the Index.dat files are in use.  They are hidden system files so cannot be deleted when Win is running.

I think you can delete it.

Just close all the programs and then via command prompt try it. Quote

I must be missing something.  I am running Win.XP.Home and here is the screen output from both Command and Cmd -

c:\>del /s index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\DUSTY\Cookies\index.dat
The process cannot access the file because it is being accessed by another process.
C:\Documents and Settings\DUSTY\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat
The process cannot access the file because it is being accessed by another process.
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Cookies\index.dat

C:\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat

c:\>

So where am I going wrong please? It doesn't matter whether the /s is used before or after the filenameTry the same in Safe mode
