Solve : Using old Cell Phone PSU to fix my Netgear Router - 5 VDC 1 Amp?

Answer»

Figured I'd SHARE this. My Netgear ROUTER's power supply started to fail even though protected behind a UPS with all my other hardware.

Symptoms of Router:

Green Power LED dimly lit.
No Network Connectivity

Tested PSU of router with Digital Multimeter and measured 4.13VDC ( way too low )

Solution to fix this:

Take an old LG Cell Phone PSU and CUT the END off, then cut the plug with length of cord off the original Netgear PSU. Match the positive (+) pole by sticking multimeter lead in it, and perform continuity test with wire at other end that is cut and copper exposed. Where continuity is found you have your (+) wire. Luckily on the LG Cell Phone PSU the 2 conductors were color coded Red(+) & Black (-), so knowing the (+) wire, I connected this to the copper strands of the LG Red wire and applied electrical tape to insulate (+). Next just join the 2 wires left over which are (-) and electrical tape to that joined wire pair. Then make a strain RELIEF loop and wrap tightly in electrical tape this section where the new PSU cord and the Netgear jack section of cord are joined.

Whalla 10 minutes later back in business with a properly functioning Netgear Router!

Glad I keep AC and DC power supplies from devices that are long gone. Its times like this when it pays off to dig through a pile of them in a box and find correct voltage and type of voltage as well as Amp rating!
