Answer» Well I am making the Ultimate "WIRED" Lan Party Rig and am having issues trying to find Cat 5 extenders.
I took a gaming TOWER and integrated the router into it. I took an old NIC butchered it to be passive by soldering a custom Cat 5 cable to the Female RJ45 after killing traces to that adapters optoisolator so that a Cat 5 cable plugged into the back of the computer from a DSL or Broadband modem is passively sent to the internal router. I then have a short Male-Male straight thru cable from port 1 on the router to the integrated NIC on the motherboard. I then will have 4 Female Cat 5 (RJ45) jacks at the front bottom face of my computer tower for others to plug into that are passed to the 4 available ports of the router that is mounted internal to the gaming tower. I cracked open the router to take the board out and mount it internally to the gaming tower and will be soldering LEDs mounted to the face of the system for each ports activity via ribbon cable going back to the router with solder taps for LEDs to function. For power to the router I took a female P-connector and cut the end off the 12Volt power supply and used the 12VDC legs off the P-connector and used heat shrink to make my own P to barrel connector cable so that the router that is installed internally is powered off of the computers power supply via an available P-connector.
I have everything I need except the one part that is nowhere to be found are Cat 5 extenders which are 1ft in length and have a normal Cat 5 (RJ45) Male jack at one end and a "snap in" Female Cat 5 (RJ45) on the other end. At my last job I had a couple of these and I cant remember where I got them. I could go with a wall-mount type bank of 4 Cat5e's, but I think it would look much better with snap in females vs looking like a wall-plate bank of 4 Cat5e's at the lower face of the computer tower.
Anyone seen what I am talking about and if so, who sells them? Worst comes worst i could always make my own I suppose, but it would be NICE to buy ones already made vs having to solder up 32 wires and heat shrink them up.
Every once in a while I come up with a frankenstein type build. The one day i realized I could integrate a spare router with a P-connector TAP, and the project spawned off from that...LOL http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=21304 Just had a thought that I could epoxy these couplers to the face of the computer, with the nasty glob of epoxy out of view and rigid enough to take pressure of plugging and unplugging. Plastic on the inside face roughed up to anchor as best as possible to the plastic vs delaminating from it when flexed. Going to hold out to see if anyone points me to the snap in extenders that i am trying to find vs this coupler/epoxy, and short patch cable solution.
Back to hunting for them It'll be a bit of a wait, but I typically rely on eBay for this type of thing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rj45-8-Pin-Male-to-Rj45-Female-8-Pins-Extension-Cable-/260954468699?pt=US_Networking_Plugs_Jacks_Wall_Plates&hash=item3cc219315b http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-5m-Network-EXTENSION-Lead-Cat5E-RJ45-Ethernet-Cable-/190688812641?pt=US_Ethernet_Cables_RJ_45_8P8C_&hash=item2c65f05e61
This lot from AliExpress costs a tiny bit more, but the shipping is more reliable and about twice as fast: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Free-Shipping-RJ45-Male-to-Female-Cable-Ethernet-Lan-Network-Adapter-Cable-10pcs-lot-Wholesale/801681_378662199.html
Of course, that's if you don't mind using Chinese products. I know a lot of people have qualms about it, but when it comes to cables, I have never had any issues. Thanks for suggesting those sources with direct links. Those are similar to what I am finding as well extenders without the female RJ45 socket with snap-in outer body. The ones I had a few years ago had a plastic spring like loop on TOP and bottom of the female RJ45 body that allowed for you to pass the Male end with cable into a square hole and when you push the female into this square hole it would snap-in and lock to the panel. The Male end then plugs into whatever is on the inside of say a cabinet, and in my case a computer tower.
Here is an example of a rocker switch with the snap-in design to snap into a panel. The extenders I had were just like this on the female outer body so that they can snap-in to a panel and hold snug and flush just like this switch in the picture of this link. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/POWER-FIRST-Rocker-Switch-2VLR2?Pid=search
All the ones I am finding are extenders without the snap-in, and they must exist if I had them a few years back. Really wish I knew were we ordered them from.Make your own...all the parts are available at CB's linx...Okay, I see what you're saying now, Dave. I'm sure they must exist somewhere, but I personally haven't seen exactly what you're describing and I'm not entirely sure where you should start. It's a bit of a pain, but you might have to go with patio's suggestion unless someone else has a better lead.I think the reason you're having problems Dave is that male RJ45 plugs connect to stranded cable and the female RJ45 sockets connect to single core cable. The plugs have a little spear that penetrates the stranded cable when you crimp them. The sockets have little scissor blades that go either side of the single core cable when you crimp them. Thanks for everyones assistance. Right now it looks like it will be less troublesome to go with couplers mounted with epoxy so that they act like jacks. I then wont have to solder 32 wires, the cost of materials will be cheaper and quality better. I am also considering modifying a bracket and have a coupler mated to it, so that I dont have a trashed NIC in a PCI slot acting as a passive device. This way it will use an empty slot space that doesnt match up with a PCI or PCIe slot and out of the way of video card etc. So that was Rev A and now onto Rev B a cleaner mod! Also with the couplers I could quickly disconnect the short Cat 5e patch cables vs have a cable bundle that is permanent to the face of the tower.Found This...
And These,,,Or These...
Good morning DaveLembke
I think what you are looking for is a keystone jack these come in punch down style and tool less design then they snap into the wall plate and the wallplates have from 1 hole to 6 holes.
Like this and the plates look like this if you want them
You can get these from ALMOST any where like homedepot, lowes etc.
I put these in because it sounds like you want to mount the RJ45 jacks into the case and then just use the other links for the extension cable if you still want them.
If you can cut a square hole the keystone jack will be held in place with the snaps.
I really hope this helps, Mike
