Solve : The best science experiment ever:?

Answer»

OK, I was thinking: I have an old computer lying around, and a science fair experiment coming around the CORNER. I thought it would be interesting to see the lowest requrements for XP.

The victim:
Pentium I 133MHZ 66FSB
32MB RAM (going to be upgraded to 64MB for installation).
2MB Diamond-something graphics card.
The HDD is upgraded from 2GB to 20GB because of XP space constraints.

Now, the problems:

1. Apparently, the BIOS is so old I cannot boot to a CDROM. Would it be possible to get a bootable diskette to make the CD boot to install XP? I've been searching around with no luck whatsoever... Maybe I'm just not TYPING in the right keywords into Google...

And please, no saying, that ain't gunna work to boot xp! Because if you google it, a guy booted XP on a 7MHZ CPU with 18MB RAM.

Thanks a lot!Do you have a floppy drive? You can create 6 floppy disks to setup XP.

XP can actually run on 2GB of RAMhard drive space, but, with such limited RAM, and pagefile considerations, it would be quite the task.

Lowest I have ever seen XP run on is 128MB of RAM, 700MHz processor, and then the 2GB HDD of course...

Just keep in mind, it will be slow as HECK. And in the world of science expirements, provide a lot of evidence so people will understand what's happening. Most people won't get it at first. BTW: take pictures for us  ; ) Quote from: Zylstra on November 16, 2008, 11:40:40 PM

XP can actually run on 2GB of RAM

Mine runs fine on 1 GB.

Now, if it's megabytes we're talking about, XP is said to run with some features disabled in 64 MB, but needs 128 MB for full (if slow) functionality.

*cough* DSL Linux is only 50MB and can run fine with just 8MB of RAM... just thought i'd let you know!A WinME boot disk will do fine...grab one from bootdisk, com. Make sure it's the one with CDROM support.

Whats more amazing is that I lack the influence of drugs in my life...

: )

I meant hard drive space, whoopsThanks for the help so far guys!

Okay, ran into another problem:

How do I modify the system clock speed to underclock it?

Should I use a software utility? And also, will the clock speed be the same when I restart? (I hope so).

One more thing:
Can I use this utility to underclock the system:
http://www.overclock.net/downloads/255892-setfsb-2-0-a.html
I would actually go with just finding a processor that runs at the speed you would like it to. Moreover, a computer from the 95 or in between 95-98 era...

Sometimes the BIOS has the ability to change clock speed. This is generally the best way, in my opinion. Check out your BIOS. If its not in there, a software overclock is the only other option. Some software applications might not let you underclock so far, since that defeats the purpose of overclockingHmm, my manual said something about SWITCHES on the motherboard...

I'll look into that.

And you're right, the only thing that lowers the CPU in bios is CPU mode during standby... And I don't WANT that. I'll look into software. Could you recommend a couple more?Trust me that CPU is slow enough to impress even your Professor if you get XP running on it...My XP runs fine under:
80 GB RAM HD
256 GB MB RAM Quote from: Ashutosh32 on November 18, 2008, 07:05:23 AM

80 GB RAM HD
256 GB MB RAM
256GB of RAM is possible.
I've always wanted to see a 256GB RAM computer, and then use it. As long as you never loose power, you wouldent even need a harddrive except for boot up... Quote from: Zylstra on November 18, 2008, 12:02:39 PM
