Solve : System Restore Problem!!?

Answer»

Hi I have a Packard Bell system running XP Pro, It is a recon unit and i have had it about 8 months, It has about 1.5 GB of memory and i have free AVG, Zone alarm and Windows defender running,

Just recently it has crashed a few times for no reason it would appear, So i thought i may have a Virus or something and i have run scans but with no LUCK,

My next thought was to try System Restore but this does not work at all,

When i try to restore to a earlier time it goes through the motions even re-booting its self but then i get the message, Cant Restore To This Time! Now i have quite a few restore points but no matter which one i try i get the same message,

I have turned System Restore off and back on again but still nothing and now i have lost all my restore points, Any ideas? ThanksQuote from: Rifleman on AUGUST 19, 2009, 02:23:20 AM

too many anti-virus programs are running... If you have more than one anti-virus running with real time protection, it will cause conflicts...

Disable one of the real time protection agents in either of your anti-virus programs..

It may not be the direct cause of your problem, but it's certainly a place to startDo you have (have you had) Norton Antivirus? If so look here:

Now that you have turned off system restore all of your restore points have been deleted.

AVG and Zone alarm are both AV programs. Having more than one antivirus program can be as bad, if not worse, than none at all.

You may have to do a clean install of the OS.Quote from: Rifleman on August 19, 2009, 02:23:20 AM

By crashed do you mean the computer restarted, or froze, or bluescreened, or shut down completely?
Random reboots can be a sign the power supply is struggling, among other things ...... how is your housekeeping, have you blown out the dust with compressed air recently?......reseat all cards and memory STICKS.......Remember to practice ESD safety in the case...touch the case before you touch any components inside...........Download Speedfan and CHECK and eliminate overheating as a problem.Quote from: blockHEAD on August 19, 2009, 02:42:16 AM

Thanks for the reply, I am a bit confused here as i thought i needed all three of these running, (AVG) Anti Virus, (Zone Alarm) Firewall and (Windows Defender) Spyware,

I wasn't aware that ZA or WD had a anti-virus element.Quote from: Karnac on August 19, 2009, 06:01:39 AM

It just restarted!! No i haven't done any housekeeping but i will now, Thanks for the advice!! and No i have never had Norton but as i said this is a recon unit and it must be possible that a previous owner did but checking all programmes there is no sign of it, At the moment i am more concerned about System Restore not working than the system crashing but maybe they are related?Problem sorted!! It was Zone Alarm, I uninstalled it and turned back on XP's own firewall and System Restore now works again,

I know there was a conflict between system update and Zone alarm a year or so ago and for some reason my system still doesn't like it but i do have all the latest updates,

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply!!

I suppose it would have helped if you specified you were using Zone Alarm Firewall (not the AV), but I'm glad you nailed it.. Gotta watch those third party firewalls!
