Solve : Slow cable modem?

Answer»

Hi all.  I have had cable internet service through Comcast for over a year now, but I have never been able to get "cable-like" speeds with it.  The only time I get decent speeds are when I'm ftp-ing, and I usually get about 350kb/s.  But when I'm downloading something normally, I always start out with a decent speed, but within a few seconds it drops down to less than 10 kb/s FOR A CABLE MODEM!  Any help would be appreciated.jaguar9400.....If you have cable , you should have D/l speeds of in excess of 350 kbps.....go here and do a speed test   http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
Are you USING some type of download manager ? Perhaps its not set up correctly. Do a speed test and then you will know WHATS going on .

hope this helps

If FTP works normally, but IE performance sucks, start looking for spyware/malware and/or virus infections.

Thanks dl65!  Yeah I know I should be getting higher speeds (I think Comcast's max is 3.5 megabits), but I just tested my desktop and it is only at 462 kb.  I've got a wireless router for my laptop, which i just tested at 2.1 megabits.  My desktop is old, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, i.e. slow processor, etc.  My main concern though, is why it can't maintain those mediocre speeds when i'm downloading stuff.  I think even if the slow speeds are related to the rest of my HARDWARE being outdated,  that still wouldn't slow DLs down to 5 kb/s or sometimes even less.jaguar9400.......What kind of processor do you have ?

Have you run the software which johnwill SUGGESTED ?

dl65  What kind of speeds does your ISP offer? I suggest you contact them if you have not yet done so.

Perhaps you have a data limit and you need to reset the modem in order to activate your next month's allowance?

I really think you should contact your ISP... Quote
