Solve : scanner re-install?

Answer»

Have HP 5550c scanner, no longer supported by HP. Uninstalled software to make room for new non-scanner stuff. Upon reinstall error message reads: "An error occurreed communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again."

HP has this error message in their archive, but the fix doesn't work for me.

I have downloaded their 'fix' software with no change. I have loaded the 'fix' on a second computer and the Scan function WORKS just fine.

I can scan using Control Panel, Scanners. I can copy using HP software that accompanies the scanning software.

My set-up is XP, SP2, Scanner VIA USB connection. Large number of software installs, but disk SPACE not an issue, and there is plenty of memory available.

I have uninstalled all Adobe software and all Omnipage software. Searched for all detritus which is now deleted.. Regedit to remove all Adobe and Omnipage entries. Scanner software reinstalled with scanner unplugged and USB connection separated at Scanner.

Does anyone know of any other software that might interfere with HP scanning software? Any other fixes?? I am trying desperately to avoid formatting and reinstalling everything again.
The scanner 'works' so I am hesitant to replace it with new.

Thanks. OG 327

How CAN'T you scan, then? The difference between Billy's scan result and an HP scan result is in the quality of the scan. There are no adjustments that are useful within #Windows scanning; HP is the polar opposite. What do use to scan? Maybe I'm missing something. OGSince you can scan from Control Panel, scanner itself seems to be working.
I assume, you reinstall some drivers/software from CD, which came with the scanner, right?
When you uninstalled, did you uninstall software, and scanner itself?
When you reinstalled, did you try to install software, first, before connecting scanner to the computer? The scanner and the software work when loaded on a second computer without the software inventory on my computer. The scanner works to copy and when run through Control panel, scanner.
The drivers are reinstalled with the updated downloaded software, yes.
During uninstall, the software and the hardware are removed, yes.
The software was reinstalled with the scanner unplugged form the 110v and the USB connector, yes.
This is not a hardware issue, nor, does it seem to be a pure software issue. It does seem to be that some computer setting, or a conflict with other software, is the issue, as all works when installed on a different computer. HTH OGGo Start>Run, type in:
services.msc
Click OK.
Find:
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service
Is it set to Automatic start?WIA: Status = Started; Startup Type - Automatic. OGOne more thing to try.
Uninstall software, then, uninstall scanner itself from Device Manager.
Shut down computer, disconnect scanner.
Turn computer on, and reinstall software. It should ask you, at some point to reconnect scanner.Same error message.

What other types of software WOULD compete with HP scanner software for access to the scanner hardware? I need to identify that software, de-install it, reinstall HP scanner software and expect the scanner and the software to TALK to each other.
