Solve : predicted hard disk failure? |
|
Answer» Today I turned my computer on and I got a MESSAGE before Windows started booting that said: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be immenent. You can't get a more explicit warning than this one. Run the hdd manufacturers diagnostics to confirm/refute the SMART warning. Good luck. What did you not understand about that message?REPLACE THE DRIVE. NOW. That is not a suggestion. It is a warning. Get a new drive and don't look back.I have no idea about what kind of hard drive I need to get. What should I look for? This one is a 40 gig, I've been thinking about upgrading to an 80 gig so i think i should get an 80 gig.Anything!Quote Anything! Well, not quite anything! Be sure that the hdd you buy is compatible with your mobo i.e. don't buy Sata if your board only supports eide. The supplier of your new hdd should be able to advise you. Good luckDetails of your computer or MOTHERBOARD?An 80GB HD would be a good choice. Here's one from TigerDirect.ca: Western Digital / Caviar / 80GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 EIDE / OEM / Hard Drive. This one would not only double your HD CAPACITY, but would also give your system a performance boost since your old drive is 5400 rpm and 2MB cache vs. 7200 rpm and 8MB cache on this one.How about this one: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10083157&catid=20240 Its only a few dollars more expensive but its 200 GBThat's a GREAT deal. I think I'd get it. |
