Solve : MSPAINT not able to open/save JPG, GIF (XP SP2)?

Answer»

Hello! My name is Apoorva. I am using WINDOWS XP SP2. Now, I am having a PROBLEM with my MSPAINT. I am not able to open any jpg or gif file in MSPAINT as it gives me an ERROR message :
"This is not a valid bitmap file......"
Also, I am not able to Export as jpg and gif from MSPAINT. In other words, when I click on the DROP down menu next to Save As Type,
neither Jpeg nor Gif is listed and also PNG and TIFF is not listed.
So, now I would like to know,
1. Why am I not able to open jpg and gif files in MSPAINT?
2. Where has jpg, gif, ong, tiff disappeared in the MSPAINT in Save As Type menu?
Please help...

No. I have not yet tried out that option. But, take for instance, I am taking a screenshot and then going into MSPAINT and pasting it. Then, I click on File - Save and in the Save As Type menu, their is no JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF options given. In other words, they have all disappeared.

Also, when I try to open jpg file, it says: "This is not a valid bitmap file, or it has a format which is not currently supported by paint"

Now, neither I am able to open jpg file in MSPAINT nor am I able to save in jpg format from MSPAINT.

So, what to do?

Try this:

1. Find a jpeg file
2. Right-click on the file (not a shortcut to the file) and choose Properties
3. In the jpeg properties dialog box, select the General tab
4. Next to Opens With, click the Change button; the Open With dialog box appears
5. Choose Paint from the LIST in the Open With dialog box and click OK
6. Click Apply and OK in the jpeg properties dialog box

From now on, mspaint.exe will open any jpeg file that you double click.  Do the same for GIF image files.

Blessings to you,
Doc
