Solve : Low on virtual memory -?

Answer»

Win 2000 Pro, IBM clone desktop PC, rather old. Main board came with 256K ram; I added another 256 about 2 years ago; for the last few months I have been getting the "Low on virtual MEMORY" notice once or twice a day. Any way to correct this - say with more RAM or anything? Tnx. Dixieflash, computer illiterateAlthough more RAM may be nice, you can remedy this by increasing the Page File.

However, before you do this, it would be nice to know your Hard Drive Capacity and Free Space (and if you have any other drives/partitions or not)

Windows 2000
1.   Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.   In the System Properties dialog box, click Advanced
3.   Click Performance Options.
4.   In the Virtual memory pane, click Change to increase the paging file.

Windows 2000 requires an Initial value of 126 MB for debugging.
5.   After you change the setting, click Set, and then click OK.
6.   In the System Control Panel APPLET dialog box, click OK to the following message:
The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect.
7.   Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
8.   When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
Okay, BEFORE I try that remedy, the computer hard drive is 40 GB, of which 20GB is unused. Thanks for your response. DixieflashOk, I don't see any harm increasing the Virtual Memory/Page File. (at least for now to see if it solves the problem)

What is it set at right now?I did what you said - VM was set on 192 - I upped it to 292 and will let it restart when the notice comes up. Tnx, C Dude. DixieflashIt was set to 192mb?

I would set it up to 500mb and see how your system performs.

Mine is currently set to 1524mb.  Upped it again, to 384, which it says is maximum. Guess my old computer is a plow horse and yours is a race horse! Tnx for the help. DixieflashDon't forget to post back with a status update. Well, 384 isn't much but it is 2X what I had so I guess it will work better. If I continue to have a problem I will re-post. Until then, thanks again for your help. DixieflashAll right. GOOD Luck!
