Solve : install windows 98?

Answer»

I don't suppose ANYONE can tell me how ti INSTALL dell version of win98 on a gateway that I deleted win me off of? What would the 'dell' version be like and why is it any different from a normal Windows 98 INSTALLATION?

Normally, the steps are very simple:

  • Prepare a bootdisk
  • Insert Windows 98CD
  • Insert bootdisk
  • Restart PC
  • (Optional) Set FDD as first boot device
  • Choose to start with CD-ROM support
  • Type format C:
  • Type D:\ (Or whatever letter is assigned to your CD-ROM drive)
  • Type setup
  • Voila
when I put the dell version in and reboot, it TELLS me it is for a dell computer only.Did you get a legal serial code with the Dell CD?If so, you can download a Windows 98SE image from the INTERNET, burn it to a disc and then use the serial. Assuming the serial is also usable on non-dell copies..

What happened to the poor Dell ? ?

If that version has native Dell drivers on it i'm afraid it is gonna make a mess of things...

patio.  8-)The Dell version is for the Dell computer that it came with. They are not universal, and some of these check the BIOS and will NOT install on anything else.
