Solve : How to turn off an annoying sound in XP?

Answer»

Greetings,

I have a Dell Laptop and run Windows XP home edition.

I would like to turn off the annoying beep I get whenever adjusting the volume control.  I don't want to mute the speaker icon but SILENCE the beep I get whenever adjusting the volume level.  Also there is an annoying clicking sound that XP provides sometimes when I change from task to task.

I have explored "sounds, speech and audio devices" and selected "none" for sounds available for everything I can find, but the beep persists.

Any ideas would be, as usual, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
sampYou can change the "Default beep" entry to a silent WAV file.

The "CLICK" sound is the default navigation sound; it's in the sounds PANEL as Windows Explorer->Complete Navigation.

Hi again,

I found the "default beep" entry but don't know how to change it to a silent WAV file....

I also selected "none" for the sound in Windows Explorer>Complete Navigation   but it still clicks whenever I shift between tasks...

I must be missing SOMETHING somewhere...

Thanks for the reply and any further help would be kindly received...

Thanks,

You have to create one

Start sound recorder (Start->Run sndrec32 or Start->All Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder)

Then you can Save the 0-length sound somewhere; in my test I saved it as C:\empty.wav for example.

Then change the default beep entry by selecting "Browse.." and choosing the empty wav file. You can assign it to whichever items you want to be silent. Most other sounds other then the default beep entry respect when you have cleared the sound (for the "Navigation Complete" for example, you should be able to just say "none" and you won't hear it anymore)

Good day,
