Solve : How do you have your desktop set up??

Answer»

Lotta people have all kinds of fancy transitions and effects, I got a pretty clean setup with windows 8 I wanted to share.

I own both windows and mac and I think they both have their advantages, however the performance of my PC VS price of a mac is just too huge.

Few things I like:

the OSX lion wallpaper is gorgeous, very relaxing and looks great - I got the 1080p wallpaper. It's very rare that I find wallpaper I like.

I like having the taskbar on the top, it just feels better to me, also I lke the gray+lion wallpaper combination of macs. I also like having a calculator on the taskbar, and a notepad for reminders/notes, and a Mycomputer short cut on desktop helps a lot! And i love itunes for managing music. Not a huge fan of the docks.

I keep a clean start menu with a weather app, and to access it I just hit the windows key.

If I want to open app, I just start typing the name, and it pops up.

I also got a SSD which makes windows 8 great!

whats interesting THOUGH apple swears by their 999$ display, but my PC looks way better with HDMI + 1080p LED monitor...Though it is a powerful gaming rig but I don't it would make much difference just for desktop appearance.

Lotta people don't like windows 8, but I'm getting comfortable with it, also can't complain that I got it for 30$!

edit: i changed the color of windows borders from the gray to a black - right clicked desktop - personalize - color.

then clicked the one closest to black, and hit show additional options, and toned the brightness down to get a darker black but still have a transparent effect...looks nice i think! Some important changes to  Windows 8 are  coming very soon.

The Start Button is in 8.1, not 8.1 update 1. Geek misses details sometimes...but so do I. Quote from: patio on January 27, 2014, 03:45:03 PM

I am not too sure of that...
Im still rocking 8 (i got it when it came out for 30$) it says i can upgrade to 8.1 for free, is it worth going to 8.1 or  is 8 better?

ive gotten pretty comfortable with 8, it doesn't take long to shut down, but i can SEE how they may seem "hidden away" Quote from: STC on January 28, 2014, 06:10:07 AM

After updating to 8.1 I can see almost no difference other than the start button reappearing which simply opens the start screen.  That said, it's a free upgrade so makes sense to do it as it will also tweak quite a bit of stuff behind the scenes. Although it's more of a service pack, didn't you follow the golden rule to back up important documents and files before installing a new OS?

There is quite a bit but most are hard to see without looking at the details. It feels like a service pack instead of a new OS. Also, What's New in Windows 8.1.

Keeping it clean...

evilfantasy,
That kinda looks like a Apple  OS X  It looks plain and simple but it actually takes a LITTLE work to get a Windows desktop clean yet keep navigation quick and easy. I had to start over from scratch with Object Dock once or twice and it took me a few sessions of tinkering. I finally learned to create an Object Dock backup file.
