Answer» About 6 months ago I moved from home for some college classes elsewhere, back then I was using a Microsoft 510 Wireless B USB adaptor. I had roughly a 100 or less ping, and a 120 KBS download rate for most websites.
I am now moved back home using the same network, the same wireless B usb, and i am now getting a ping of 200-300 on average.
I have tried moving up to a Wireless G usb adaptor, same ping, and a Linksys PCI-G card, and the same thing still.
I have checked the microsoft base station, and everything is properly SET for a G system (YES, the base is G).
I cannot think of anything that would keep me from achieving a rate that i had LAST time.
We do have a Cable modem and the same one as last time.
Literally everything is the same. But The rate achieved is much much worse.
Any Ideas on how to fix this? There's nothing a USER can do about ping performance. It's just that the network (Outside of your control) has deteriorated or become over subscribed since you last used it.
Try a few traceroutes etc at different times of the day to see if a pattern emerges. Perhaps your ISP is unaware of a dodgy router somewhere. PingPlotter is a useful tool and it provides pretty graphs.
